East is East

We meet the Khan family in the movie. The family consists of many colourful personalities.
Mr Khan - George, Mrs Khan- Ella, Amina,Nazir, Abdul, Tariq, Maneer, Saleem, Sajit.
I sympatize with the mother Ella because she is really sticking up for her children and trying to defend them in a culture where her opinion counts for next to nothing. She is caught in the middle.
But what about you? Which character can you identify with or find the most interesting and why?

  1. I have also sympathy with the mother, because I think she is the most human person in the movie. She is not "the perfekt mother" but she tries to be fair and understand her children.

  2. I think the father is very interesting. He is a big contrast to my own father and for that I am happy. I could not at all imagine my father planning my wetting or deciding my dressing. And I would not ever accept him hurting my mother or my brother. Automatically we find George disagreeable – but why? Maybe it is just complicated to feel his emotions? Maybe it is just complicated to understand the Pakistani culture? I would like to find the reasons behind his actions and I would like understand what makes him take this strong position as the head of the family.

  3. They are all very interesting characters, because they are a mix of two very different cultures. You've got George from Pakistan and Ella from England and all their children, who all have different character.

The character, whom I find the most interesting is, as Anna B, George. George is Pakistani inside out. Still he is living in an British surburb getting paid by serving british "Fish'nd'Chips." He also married a true british woman. But it seems like George's mind is still in Pakistan, and as his children grows older, and as they (some more than others) seperate themselves, one by one, from the Pakistani way of living, he gets more more frustrated, because he is not in control. It is not until the, bitter, some might say, end, he realizes that he cannot treat Ella or the Children as if they were Pakistani.
The frustration, confusion, hate and love George shows during this film, makes him the character who stands out. He is sort of the black sheep of the movie. The "Bad guy." But a bad guy, whom I sympathize with, because no matter what he's doing, he does it because he is certain that it serves is family's interest most. All though this result of his own ignorance, end of in a huge fight, I think he seems more at calm, in the last scene, than anyway else in the movie.
I can relate George to my own family because he is nothing like any of the role-models I have respected and loved. But the differences between them and George are what makes him interesting. What makes me wonder and ask questions about how to human beings can be so extremely different, and also so extremely alike in the way of wanting the best for your family.

  4. In my oponion, the most interesting person is the father, I do not understand him at all, because his personality is so extremly different from our lifestyle.
However, a person like yourself, you also will know in a way, because you know yourself. Different people are interesting, because they can be different at so many ways. It might not only be in a positive way - her it is in a negative way, but still it is interesting because you cannot relate to the way he treats his family, and then you will try to understand why he behaves like he does...

  5. Abdul is the character I can identify the most with, I think. He is not the most outgoing person nor the most interesting of them all, but I think he is the most attentive and observant of the kids. He is able to see the different aspects of a conflict and he does not condemn his father, even though he disagrees with his actions. He wants his family to be happy and does not seem very selfish – perhaps because he does not know what he, himself, wants, but I guess that is a part of his charm.

  6. As many of my classmates I find the father- George interesting. My reason is that he actually practices a double standard. Because he got married to an English woman but then he is trying to tell his sons not to marry English women because they are so slutty.
Then the movie also makes me glad that I don’t live in a family where everything have to be decided by my father.

  7. Growing up with three bothers I think that I sympathizes the most with Meenah. Being kind of a tompboy, even though her dad wants her to dress like a proper girl. I can understand her dilemma between being one of the boys or daddy’s little girl. I also find her very interesting because she is more rude, than any of the boys.

  9. I do not find a certain person in the film interesting. I find what they stand for as a character as interesting. You know as a symbol. I see the characters in this movie as stereotypes. What I think is exciting, is the trouble and conflict between these two cultures and this film is how the micro-socialization could look like. The problems with immigration and the collision between cultures are interesting and relevant - also today, but often we only hear how things develop in the big picture seen from a macro socialization perspective. This film gives us a suggestion and a picture of how this micro socialization might look like.
I think it is exciting and for me it gives much to think about and take notes of.

P.S. I do not see George as the bad guy. I see him as a victim as much as the mother and the kids
