East is East

We meet the Khan family in the movie. The family consists of many colourful personalities.
Mr Khan - George, Mrs Khan- Ella, Amina,Nazir, Abdul, Tariq, Maneer, Saleem, Sajit.
I sympatize with the mother Ella because she is really sticking up for her children and trying to defend them in a culture where her opinion counts for next to nothing. She is caught in the middle.
But what about you? Which character can you identify with or find the most interesting and why?

What is it to be Danish? A lot of things comes to mind. roast pork, handball, football, freedom of speach, no censureship, frikadeller, drinking, and Danish dynamite. Theres is a lot of things that could descripe us as a nation, but another thing is "hygge". it is as simple as that. We like to "hygge" all the time. Rather we are wacthin a movie with friends, or even when we are out drinkin we use the word "hygge". to me it is the most danish feeling of all.
I wasn't born in Denmark, I don't have a danish passport nor do I speak much danish or let alone have danish roots. But I do live in Denmark, I go to a danish school, I have danish friends and I am learning the language along with other danish customns and traditions. After a whole year here will I be able to claim a danish identity?! Or is it unachievable for me simply because I wasn't born here. The government currently reconizes me as a temporary citizen of Denmark. Like all other danish citizens I'm covered by the health care system, my schooling is payed for, I have a CPR number and I have a residents permit. I myself don't identify as a Dane; I'm a Canadien. I'm the daughter of a french and a german immigrant but despite my roots I identify as a Canadien because it is the country I grew up in and have come to love. My parents also identify as canadien despite having grown up in Europe because they say 'Canada is where there heart is now'. That being said, if I fully embraced Denmarks customs, traditions and cultures, speak fluent danish and truly fall in love with the country, all by the end of the year would it be correct for me to say I'm a Dane?
You don't have to be a fan of Matador and your favorite meal doesn't have to be frikadeller and persillesovs. In the summer you are not forced to eat strawbarries with cream and celebrating christmas is not even a requirement.
It is your choice to be a vegatarian or live of kebab, you can dress as you want; wear a burka or a shirt skirt. As long as you let the other people be, who they are, you have every right to be yourself. As long as you tolerate the ones who disgust you and accept that others may have nasty thoughts about you, you can be who you are.
As long as you do not harm any one or break the law, it is your choice how to be danish.

Dear 2z students
I´m a Dane, but what  makes me a Dane? Is it my Danish passport or is it the fact that I live in Denmark?
Is nationality something you are born with or something you are able to choose?
What do you think?
